The Future is Purple
Aquarist like new rare fish, with character and good looks
![]()
The Cyphotilapia Gibberosa Kitumba or more commonly know as the Zaire Purple are very rare in this country and i only know of two other people to own genuine wild specimens. That and the fact they are notoriously difficult to breed - keeps there price for genuine specimens high and this adds to its must have status. But this also brings with it a downside as not much is known about these fish so Unscrupulous shop owners are trying to sell any kind of Gibberosa / Frontosa off as these rare fish and charge a lot of money for them. I get lots of emails from people to try and ID there specimen and then they tell me that they bought them from this pet shop under the name of Zaire Purple / Blue.
Out of the 3 groups i know of in the UK two have successfully bred these fish, i am happy to say i am one of them and you can see pictures of the young on this site. A lot of breeders of Gibberosa & Frontosa say F1 fry are better looking than there wild parents and i can agree with this whole heartly, there are no melanomas on the skin or damaged scales or fins. So with the slow but steady increase of genuine F1 Kitumba fry available here in the UK i would say 'The future is definately Purple'.
The name Gibberosa differs from frontosa in that Gibberosa species are generally from the South and frontosa is for the species from the north. For more Info
The name frontosa comes from the latin meaning - bump head, given to this species for there unusully big fatty nachal hump, in my opinion the Burundi is the king of the hump.
Gibberosa/Frontosa are renowend for slow growing, but its worth the wait. males can reach to 14" and live until they are 25yrs old. With long flowing fins & trailers a beautiful sight
Guide to Sexing Frontosa's
Many people say they have a reliable way of sexing Frontosas - be it by shape, size of there hump etc everyone has the same chance of being right 50% there is only one sure way of sexing your frontosa and thats venting ..................
