How to sex Frontosa

Sexing Gibberosa/Frontosa
The only true way of sexing your fish.
This is by no means easy even for the experienced aquarist, but the sketch tries to show the difference between the male & female papilin. The older your fish the more developed and bigger the sex organs are and the easier it is to differentiate. To do this so that it causes the least amount of stress to your fish, i have 3 buckets fill of water from the tank and they are marked Males, Females and unsure. I use a jewelers loop (eye piece) for the smaller fish. And go through them one by one and put the fish in the appropriate bucket, if unsure then put it in the unsure bucket. Do not have your fish out of the water any longer than nessesry and make sure your hands are wet before lifting any fish. Also try and have clean hands and not recently washed with detergent or soap, as this damages the fishes skin and if enough is present can poison the rest of your fish when added back to the tank. To see the sketch in full size click View above.
I have even had males hold eggs in there mouths for some days. They alledgedly take them from the female to encourage more spawning or bigger broods.
It has been reported that a trusted frontosa man in the UK has got a female with one of the biggest humps he has ever seen. Just another reason for venting you fish.
If you still cannot sex your Gibberosa/Frontosa then there is only one other method of knowing the sex of your fish for sure and that is to catch them at it, Good luck!
